4. Reading: The Problem with Idols
The vast majority of young people have someone they admire — a musician, an athlete, a scientist, or a social media figure. A significant proportion of teenagers report that their idol has positively shaped their values and ambitions. Although this is encouraging, the phenomenon of idol worship is more complex than it first appears.
Despite the benefits of having role models, there are genuine risks. A great deal of evidence suggests that celebrity culture creates unrealistic standards — of beauty, success and lifestyle. While a handful of influencers use their platform responsibly, the majority produce content designed purely to maximise engagement. Admittedly, social media platforms carry some responsibility for this; yet it is ultimately consumers who must develop critical literacy.
Nevertheless, the ideal of having a positive role model — someone who demonstrates integrity, resilience and authentic achievement — remains powerful. What we need is not fewer idols, but better idols. It is character, not celebrity, that should be the measure of admiration.
