Formal: "The growing prevalence of sedentary behaviour has contributed to the deterioration of public health."

📖
3. Reading: The Wellbeing Paradox

In an era of unprecedented material prosperity, the prevalence of anxiety, depression and burnout has reached epidemic proportions. The acknowledgement of this paradox — that societies have never been wealthier yet their citizens never more mentally distressed — represents one of the most significant intellectual challenges of our time.

The deterioration of communal bonds, the acceleration of digital life and the erosion of meaningful work have all been identified as contributing factors. It is widely suggested that the prevailing culture of productivity and achievement — which frames rest as laziness and vulnerability as weakness — has actively impeded the development of genuine wellbeing.

The cultivation of resilience, mindfulness and self-efficacy — skills that have been demonstrated to buffer against the effects of chronic stress — is increasingly being incorporated into educational curricula. Were this approach to be adopted universally, it is conceivable that rates of mental illness could be significantly reduced. The destigmatisation of psychological distress is not a luxury; it is a public health imperative.
