4. Reading: The Letter

The moment Mira saw her grandmother's handwriting on the envelope, she felt a wave of something she could not immediately name — such was the mixture of nostalgia, apprehension and love that swept through her.

Her grandmother had died three months earlier. The letter, given that it had been written in her final weeks, must have required extraordinary effort. Much as Mira had tried to prepare herself, her hands shook as she unfolded the pages.

The letter began: "By the time you read this, I will be gone. But I need you to know something I was never able to say aloud — I was remorseful for years of silence. No sooner had I retired than I understood how much time I had wasted on things that didn't matter. The truth is that I was afraid of vulnerability. The more I loved, the more frightened I became."

Mira read the words three times. She was so overwhelmed that she could not cry. Once the initial shock had passed, something shifted inside her. She understood, perhaps for the first time, that the bravest thing a person can do is open their heart — even when it trembles.
