4. Reading: The Rescue
The water was already at his chest when Levent made his decision. Never had he felt such fear — and yet he did not hesitate. No sooner had he jumped into the flooded basement than he felt the child's small hand reach out in the darkness.
Little did he know that the building's structure was on the verge of collapse. Behind him, the walls groaned. Ahead, the staircase had already disappeared beneath the churning black water. Not only was the child terrified, but she had also been injured, clinging to a narrow ledge above the rising water.
Hardly had he secured the child in his arms than the ceiling above them cracked ominously. With a strength he had not known he possessed, he pushed forward. Only when they burst through the surface, gasping into the cold night air, did the crowd on the street above begin to cheer.
Later, when asked what had driven him to act, Levent simply said: "Someone had to." No sooner had the words left his lips than the building behind him collapsed with a thunderous roar. He held the child tighter and did not look back.
