3. Fact vs Opinion vs Bias

4. Reading: Can We Trust the News?
Trust in mainstream media has been declining for years. A recent survey revealed that fewer than 40% of people in developed countries believe the news they read online. Journalists are alleged to have fabricated stories; major outlets have been accused of bias; and social media algorithms have been shown to promote outrage over accuracy.
Governments have warned that disinformation poses a threat to democracy. Scientists have confirmed that false news travels six times faster than true news on social media platforms. The whistleblower Frances Haugen claimed that Facebook had been knowingly amplifying divisive content for profit.
And yet, giving up on journalism entirely would be a mistake. Investigative journalists have exposed corruption, saved lives and held power to account for centuries. The solution is not distrust — it is critical thinking. We must be taught to ask: who wrote this? What sources are cited? What has been omitted? Media literacy is no longer optional; it is a survival skill.
