4. Reading: The Reluctant Hero — Nikola Tesla
Born in Serbia in 1856, Nikola Tesla moved to the United States in 1884, carrying little more than a letter of recommendation to Thomas Edison. Driven by an extraordinary imagination, he was to become one of history's most prolific — and most overlooked — inventors.
Having worked briefly for Edison, Tesla left to pursue his own vision: alternating current (AC) electricity. The AC system, developed by Tesla, now powers virtually every home on Earth. Yet Tesla died penniless and alone in 1943, having been largely forgotten by the world he had illuminated.
Recognised only posthumously for his true contribution, Tesla has since been celebrated as a visionary trailblazer. Having invented the radio, the transformer and the foundations of wireless communication, his work underpins the digital world we live in. He is, arguably, the epitome of unsung genius.
