3. Reading: The Unstoppable Ada Lovelace

Ada Lovelace (1815–1852) is widely considered the world's first computer programmer, even though computers as we know them had not yet been invented. She was born in England as the daughter of the poet Lord Byron, but was raised by her mother, who insisted on a rigorous mathematical education — unusual for women at that time.

Ada was introduced to the mathematician Charles Babbage, whose unbuilt "Analytical Engine" she recognised as far more than a calculator. The notes she wrote to translate an article about the Engine contained the first algorithm intended to be processed by a machine.

I wish Ada Lovelace had lived longer — she died at just 36. If only she had seen the modern computer, which owes so much to her vision. Her legacy has been acknowledged by the programming language "Ada", which was named in her honour in 1980. She truly was a visionary trailblazer.
